The Chargers played in Balboa Stadium before the stadium in the valley opened in 1967.
I'm happy that there are people willing to pay to see a Charger or Padre game because without them there would be no NFL or MLB.
The older I get the less sports I watch and what I do watch is on TV. I read non fiction only, mostly WWII history and most of my TV is the SMITHSONIAN CHANNEL.

Name : Rockinrob Email : PAW Message Did you ever get a chance to watch the San Diego Chargers when they were an AFL powerhouse in the 1960s?
The Chargers were already part of the NFL (and quite lousy until the Fouts era) when I started watching football in 1970. But my dad used to tell me stories about Lance Alworth and the other stars of the AFL Chargers. They won the AFL Championship in 1963.
Didn't the Chargers play their home games at Balboa Park?

Name : PAW Email : Message West end of Broadway, downtown SD. Lots of pics on the internet. Buddy Webb and I bought box seat tickets right at the entrance to the first base dugout. 1957 as I recall, about $2.50.
Back then they played seven game series. Tues-Fri night games. Sat afternoon and Sun. double header. Mon. travel.
Players didn't make much money so they had winter jobs. Outfielder Dain Clay was a milkman in Chula Vista.
The left field stands were condemned therefore always vacant. There was a one game playoff against Hollywood to determine the championship in 1954. They put ropes in front of the outfield fences and sold standing room behind them. Night game, televised locally. Bob Elliot, former major leaguer, was the Padre hero.
Every ten cent box of cracker jacks contained a 4X4 inch glossy picture of a Coast League player. I must have had a hundred of those pictures. Gave them away to a friend's younger brother in about 1960. So stupid, I'd give a hundred bucks to just see them today.

Sorry, I'll quit boring you.

Here's a treat: You can watch Koufax pitch Game 7 of the 1965 World Series (Dodgers vs. Twins)on YouTube. It's quite obvious why he was/is considered to be the best pitcher in the last 50 years.

Ya know, I haven’t been following baseball for a long time. And I was an avid Dodger fan when I was interested in it. I would take my transistor radio to work with me (I worked night shift at Rohr) and listen to every game. This is when they had Koufax and Drysdale.
Man those were some good games. I feel it’s sorta a feather in my cap to say I watched and heard them LIVE when they were playin ball.
The Padres went to the world series once I think, but I don’t think they have been good lately. And I think they traded away their best superstar a few years ago, so.. I’m not expecting much this year.

Name : WRT Email : PAW/Vic Message Oops. My mistake! Army jump wings and marksmanship badges are NOT situated above medals of valor and other ribbons on a service uniform. They're below them. Jump wings are on top for some fancy dress uniforms, but that's not what I was thinking of. I was way wrong.
Thu 27 Jun 2019 05:23:36
Name : To VIC Email : From PAW Message I think the Army put the CIB above the other ribbons because it wouldn't fit anywhere else. WRT is right, it certainly wasn't put there because of it's importance.
Come on Vic, PROVE IT THAT WRT AND
I ARE WRONG.
I'll say it again as I did in the past. You put the CIB WHERE THE ARMY TELLS YOU TO PUT IT. They tell you to put it there because that's where it fits best, no other reason.
Thu 27 Jun 2019 08:48:19
Name : WRT Email : Message Since it's on top of all other medals because of its importance, I guess Vic thinks the CIB is more important than a Bronze Star, Silver Star, Distinguished Service Cross, or even the ribbon for a Medal of Honor. For that matter, we can only assume he thinks jump wings or marksmanship badges are more important than those awards for valor since they're placed above those medals as well. That's kind of funny, actually.
I think the Army put the CIB where they did because they think it looks and fits better there. But, whatever the reason, it CERTAINLY wasn't because it's more important than the honors situated below it.

Name : To Vic Email : From PAW Message Well, Vic, you're back and as usual you come across as the numbskull that you are.
You post on the Sports Board, of all places, that I "go after" BW because I'm jealous that BW has a Bronze Star. What in the world does BW's Bronze Star have to do with our disagreements? Has it ever occured to you that when I disagree with BW he ALSO DISAGREES WITH ME?
A disagreement REQUIRES TWO parties Vic. For there to be a disagreement TWO PEOPLE HAVE TO HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS. Why are you incapable of understanding that Vic? If I "go after" BW after he posts something then he is "going after " me when he responds.
Aren't you "going after" me in that last post of yours? I don't really mind your doing so because it's always fun to respond to you.
What about BW "going after" 64, WRT and me? He has called us some pretty vicious names. I guess that's okay, huh?
How much time do you spend dreaming this stuff up? I went back three months and could not find a single disagreement between BW and myself. All I could find was that we AGREED on the bullet train fiasco, reparations for blacks and the Padres.
So why did you pick this time to spread a little hate and discontent? Actually it does give you an opportunity tell all of us, especially the new people, that you are a Vietnam veteran. How many times have you done that over the years? Quite a few Vic, quite a few.
Wed 26 Jun 2019 10:18:26
Name : WRT Email : vic64 Message I remember that conversation about the Combat Infantryman's Badge. PAW had to correct BW when he said the badge was two crossed rifles. PAW knew it was a single musket.
I have a problem with the CIB only being awarded to those in the Infantry and Special Forces. That leaves A LOT of Army war heroes walking around without it. Combat veterans from armor, artillery, combat engineers, military police, members of the 1st Cavalry Div., and even helicopter pilots are all ineligible for the CIB. That cheapens it a little in my eyes.

Name : vic64 Email : paw Message I still read posts from this, whatever, and I find that paw is still the hateful man he was some time ago. He spends his time going after BW, who was awarded a bronze star. I have the feeling that paw, who never served in active duty, is just plain jealous. paw even argued with myself because I was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge. I had posted that the C.I.B. was put on a soldiers uniform above all other medals because of it's importance. The only thing paw could come up with is that the medal was above all on a soldiers uniform because that was where the Army said to put the medal. I did not post anything after that because I was laughing so hard. I am still laughing. Oh, by the way, the CIB is still put above every ribbon on a soldiers uniform. The CIB is still not a ribbon. Every soldier honors that medal and it's significance. Of course, there are those that will never understand what the CIB means, right paw? Have a nice day.

The only time I got into games was on the kickoff and receive team. During practice I played defense against the first team. On one play I found myself trying to tackle our the first string running back. He was an all-league running back named Jimmy Holt. He faked me out so bad that all I ended up grabbing was air. After practice he pulled me aside. Of course I felt intimidated. I thought he was going to make fun of my 'air tackle'. He told me that when I ran into that circumstance again that I shouldn't look at the runner's head, shoulders or feet. He said, "focus on his waist". He told me that I couldn't be 'juked' by watching his waist. I felt humbled. The great Jimmy Holt was giving me advice.
I became a starter as a senior. I was put at defensive back. During one of our first games the running back on my side got a pitch out. It was just me and him. He tried to 'juke'. I didn't fall for it and tackled him for a loss.
I will never forget that advice. No, I didn't play football after high school, but I learned a valuable lesson. Those who have had experience in what I try to do should always be heard. Not always the best advice, but they speak from their experience--always worth hearing.
Those that belittle others? Watch their waist. They often try to 'juke'.

Well at least we will get another high draft choice.
I swear, if we stay healthy for JUST ONE YEAR we will go to the supper bowl. We have a large bunch of young players that are REALY good, just lacking experience.

Name : PAW Email : Message What's with Phillip Rivers? No matter if he throws a TD pass or an interception he ALWAYS takes his helmet off when walking off the field. Is there any other quarterback who feels the need to do that so that all the people on TV can see his handsome face?
After one of his interceptions yesterday he was laughing on the sidelines right after taking the helmet off.

Spanos, like all of us, will go to where the most money is.

Name : WRT Email : Message It's looking REALLY bad for the Chargers staying in San Diego. I may soon have to make a decision on whether or not I will remain a Charger fan. The best part of San Diego Chargers has ALWAYS been "San Diego". Without it, they're pretty much just another team with an owner that cares little about winning. I will likely cozy up to another team.

Name : Dave Email : Message I don't know how much greater they'd be with more first stringers. It didn't help at the start of the season. Offense still had weaknesses. And the coach seems to have fostered a culture of players losing discipline and playing like rookies in the 4th quarter.
I can see the possible potential you speak of now that Gordon finally started protecting the ball better

They have to talk about subjects that are of interest to ALL football fans not just Charger fans. That is if they want to keep their jobs.

Name : go Chargers Email : Message They aren't wrong about Thursday games having a lack of prep and rest. But a lot of these teams go into it under similar circumstances. The only time a team would have a clear advantage is if they are coming off a bye week.

Name : WRT Email : Message I forgot to mention. I listened to a couple of ESPN talk shows the morning after the Chargers beat the Broncos. Was the talk all about our stunning upset victory or kudos for the Chargers? Hell no! All they talked about is how low scoring and sloppy Thursday night games are. How teams are unprepared and they should do away with games that night. Because, after all, if the Chargers beat the defending Superbowl champs, it can only mean the system needs an overhaul.

Tue 18 Oct 2016 07:01:06
Name : David Email : Message Strength and conditioning may make no real difference with all the ACL and other tendon tears taking out several starters. Tendons strengthen at a very different rate than muscles, tends to be very limited. In some cases, when there are pec or bicep tears at the tendon and rips right off the bone, some conjecture that those on steroids and hgh see their muscles strengthen at a faster rate and level than connective tissue can keep up with and support.
Often it can be a freakish thing that happens trying to move or do something you'd never think could injure you.
These are pro athletes where hiring strength and conditioning coaches is the difference between multi million dollar contracts and being replaced. I doubt most of these athletes are being lazy in the off season. Training all-year has been the norm.
Bad in-season conditioning may have an effect on guys gassing out in the fourth quarter and playing sloppy.

Mon 17 Oct 2016 11:17:51
Name : Lollie Email : Message Maybe everyone is looking at the wrong coach to fire. Maybe they need a new strengthening/conditioning coach. Off season doesn't mean these guys should be taking it easy. It means they should be whipping their bodies into shape for the next season. If their bodies were conditioned properly then they might not lose 2-3 (sometimes more) starters per game. Sometimes it all goes back to what they're doing or not doing during the off season. As far as shooting themselves in the foot in the last quarter of the game, well, that's an entirely different story. But maybe they'd have a fighting chance if the starters weren't dropping like flies.

Tue 04 Oct 2016 08:14:59
Name : David Email : Message A winning season would certainly help their cause. The Padres rode a great run at the championship to that new stadium. Though John Moore's people did a great PR job of selling what they believed a baseball stadium can do for revitalizing nearby real estate.
I get it though, NFL franchises are scarce and can't be replaced. It's arguably a seller's market. They may reasonably believe they can more with far less work.
Of course, there may be one hard reality to face. The personnel on the field may be as good as their draft team and GM can manage to acquire.
Tue 04 Oct 2016 10:26:03
Name : WRT Email : Message It's funny. We've all seen how players will kick it up a notch when it's time to renew their contracts or become free agents. But the Chargers are too cheap to even make a run for greatness when it's time for a vote on a new stadium. Even if they really don't want to stay in San Diego, a winning team would be much more attractive to some other city.

Sun 02 Oct 2016 04:50:01
Name : Dave Email : Message Well there you go. They went from losing close games to giving away games that were in the bag. Maybe it is time to fire McCoy before this losing mentality is ingrained too deeply for the next head coach.
Tue 27 Sep 2016 07:20:31
Name : Dave Email : Message They may as well keep the coaching staff and let the young players get as much experience as possible without the distractions of losing a head coach.
Wholesale changes like a new GM may be in order. Since Telesco came in, shoring up a patchwork o-line has been a real problem. Years later, it's still a major problem. And the front office is finding ways to make a public spectacle of private personnel issues, such as Bosa's contract negotiations or the issues with Weddle when he was on his way out.

Name : PAW Email : Message Right WRT! And according to FORBES the team is worth 2.08 billion dollars. That's two billion, eighty million dollars. Think of it this way, two thousand, eighty million dollars.
So why doesn't Spanos just do it?
Because he still thinks that SOMEWHERE there will be a city with politicians and voters stupid enough to do it for him. And sadly, he might be right.
